Candle Care & Safety Guide
Burn Bright. Burn Safe. Burn with Intention.
Every J Lux candle is hand-poured with care in the spirit of St. Croix — slow, intentional, and made to last. To help you get the most from every flame, we've put together this guide rooted in best practices from the National Candle Association and our own craft standards. Please review all safety guidance before lighting, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
🕯️ The First Burn — Set the Memory
Your candle's first burn is its most important. Allow the melt pool to reach the full edge of the vessel before extinguishing — this prevents tunneling and ensures an even, long-lasting burn throughout the life of the candle. For most J Lux candles, plan for — typically 2–4 hours. Never burn longer than 4 hours at a time.
✂️ Trim the Wick — Every Single Time
Before each burn, trim your wick to ¼ inch (6mm). A trimmed wick produces a cleaner, brighter flame and reduces soot, mushrooming, and uneven burning. Use a wick trimmer or small scissors and remove any debris from the wax pool before lighting.
Tip: If the flame ever appears too high or flickers excessively, extinguish it, let it cool, and trim the wick before relighting.
📍 Safe Placement — Let Your Space Breathe
- Place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from edges.
- Keep away from curtains, bedding, books, paper, and other flammable materials.
- Maintain at least 12 inches of clearance above the flame.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended.
- Avoid burning in drafty areas — open windows, vents, or fans can disturb the flame and cause uneven burning.
💨 Drafts & Airflow — Protect the Flame
Drafts are the quiet enemy of a perfect burn. Air movement causes your candle to burn hotter and faster on one side, leading to uneven wax consumption and a shortened candle life. Burn your J Lux candle in a calm, still space to honor the slow, intentional ritual it was crafted for.
🌀 Tunneling — How to Avoid It
Tunneling happens when a candle burns straight down through the center, leaving wax along the walls of the vessel. The best prevention is simple: always allow a full melt pool on the first burn and every burn thereafter. If minor tunneling has occurred, try a foil tent method — loosely tent aluminum foil over the top of the candle (with a small opening for airflow) and burn for 1–2 hours to encourage the wax to melt evenly to the edges.
📦 Storage — Preserve the Scent
- Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity.
- Replace the lid or cover when not in use to protect the fragrance and prevent dust accumulation.
- Avoid storing near heat sources or in vehicles during warm months.
- Soy wax can develop a natural white bloom ("frosting") over time — this is cosmetic and does not affect scent or performance.
🛑 When to Stop Burning
Discontinue use when wax depth — typically ½ inch / 1.3cm of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel. Burning beyond this point can cause the vessel to overheat, damage surfaces, and in rare cases, pose a safety risk. Once finished, allow the vessel to cool completely before handling or repurposing.
A Note from J Lux
These candles were created to carry you somewhere — maybe the salt air of a St. Croix evening, the warmth of an open-air kitchen, or a quiet moment just for you. Care for them the way you'd care for any small luxury: with attention, patience, and a little love. Thank you for welcoming J Lux into your home.
